Babies outgrow things fast, so lots of good gear is available secondhand. A few items need special care.
Check every used item
- Look it up for recalls at CPSC.gov or Recalls.gov
- Make sure all parts and instructions are there
- Check for cracks, loose parts and missing labels
Extra care
- Car seats: only if you know its full history, it's never been in a crash, and it isn't expired; otherwise buy new
- Cribs: must meet current federal safety standards; avoid drop-side cribs
- Mattresses: buy new, firm and the right size
